How to check for ticks

Many ticks are as small as a pinhead, so they’re difficult to see. Don’t assume they’re not present if they’re not visible. Be sure to check your furry-family members for tick after they have spent time outside. Ticks prefer to attach close to the animal’s head, neck, or belly.

  1. Start with the head, make sure you check the whisker area, alongside and under the snout.
  2. Then, check in and around the ears before examining your pet’s belly, back, and paws, including between the toes and tail.
  3. Be sure to be gentle when combing his hair. If you come across a snag, it might be a tick. You don't want to pull the tick out with the comb and leave pieces behind.

If you find a tick you will want to remove it as soon as possible. Read How to Get Rid of Ticks to learn how to properly remove a tick.
